Principal Roles and Objectives
The Sugar Milling Research Institute (SMRI) is the central scientific organisation involved in research work and technical
services for the southern African sugar milling and refining industries.
Membership
All 14 raw sugar factories
in South Africa
and the central refinery of the Tongaat-Hulett Group are Full Members of the
SMRI. In addition, the Institute provides a technical service to a number of
Affiliated Member mills in Swaziland,
Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Kenya,
Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania.
Finance
The Institute is financed
by a levy on the sugar produced at member mills and by payments for contract
research and technical services undertaken for individual mills.
Governance and Control
The SMRI's
strategic direction is overseen by the SMRI Board of Directors. The Institute's
research activities are reviewed by an Advisory Research Committee which
consists of members elected to represent the Institute's member mills.
