Training Services
The SMRI training offerings are widely regarded as among the best of their kind world-wide. Much of the success can be attributed to the programmes being customised to meet the technical training needs of the southern African sugar industry.
The diversity of topics covered in classroom-based offerings also attracts international attendees. The SMRI training is highly valued as it is delivered by sugar experts, many of whom are either accredited trainers, industry committee executives or senior managers in manufacturing companies. Thus, in addition to cane sugar technology skills, a practical perspective is obtained. The SMRI strives to ensure that no two training offerings are the same, as the topics and material are constantly revised to meet industry’s training needs. In 2018, 126 people were trained by the SMRI through the various training programmes.

Intrinsic value of SMRI Training
The SMRI has been serving the training needs of the greater sugar industry for many decades and has empowered numerous individuals during this time to advance in their careers whilst adding value to their respective sugar companies. Philemon Nkosi (left), student on the 2003 SMRI Ten Week Course in Sugar Engineering, and now General Manager at Illovo Sugar (SA) Pty Ltd – Eston factory and a Director on the SMRI Board of Directors, speaks about his SMRI training experience. “The SMRI Ten-Week Course provides a strong technical base for one’s broader understanding of the sugar manufacturing process, together with associated support services. Further to this, I certainly derived huge value from the opportunity to network and get to know industry colleagues which went on to be a source of support for my growth within the industry”. Philemon adds that future industry leaders would benefit from modules on biorefining and data analytics. These are now current offerings on the SMRI Ten-Week Course.
